web surfing this morning and came across this article on Yahoo! Health,
It was one of the MAIN article on Yahoo! cleverly titled....wait for it,

NEW FINDINGS ABOUT SUGAR

Shut the fuck up. I had to click on it.
To say I was irritated was an understatement...I hate those people that comment on these types of articles where they preach for 1000 words. I just became one of those people....Yahoo! just had to know. I wasn't alone in my slightly nauseous reaction to the contents of this article.
The odd thing, it wasn't controversial, it wasn't a breaktaking new discovery, it wasn't a shock to the system by any means.
Quite the contrary, it was nothing. It was boring, 2000 words about a stale topic that unless you live under a rock in the middle east, (I take that back, even that shit head terrorist leader is bound to know sugar is bad for you. )

I left my soapbox comment and let the Yahoo! know they should edit the article and omit pretty much everything and leave one sentence.
Don't eat so much fucking sugar, its making you FAT.
simple, and even our nutritionally illiterate people should hopefully get the message.

I want to start a petition to remove all the brain-numbingly pointless articles from quote, "news sources." Because unfortunately Yahoo! isn't the only guilty party.

Yea, you heard me CNN and FOX.
Here's the article, just so you get what I'm talking about. http://health.yahoo.com/experts/joybauernutrition/29699/the-dangerous-side-of-sugar/

Have a sweet day!

New Year, New Blog

Hello lovely followers. Starbucks...duh

I don't know if its the fact that being outside the city is making me crave Starbucks more than normal. I've tried several soy latte's at various little cafe's around the city, but I just can't seem to kick my grade vanilla soy latte habit from S*bucks. (Peppermint latte during the winter, or Venti Iced Coffee, with a splash of soy during the summer)

2. Tiffany & Co. Key necklaces

I have been drooling over this new collection from Tiffany for months now. And now that I'm an official employee of Tiffany & Co. I feel it is only my duty to society and my neckline to pick up one of these little guys. They are just so fabulous and timeless.

3. I love her style and can't get enough of all of them. The shit they say is just hilarious.
4. And everyone else seems to be as well. Every store is glittering with sequin everything! I added a leopard sequined blazer to my clothing collection and I'm totally craving a silver one!

5. But this one was too good and amazing to pass up. I am running a 12km race this weekend and have been trying to keep a really healthy diet for the week leading up to it (I eat healthy most of the time, but this week is my diet on steroids, not actual steriods but just super healthy...you get my point)
I think I may have discovered the most delicious, unbelievably nutritious meal that one could make in under 10 minutes. You heard me right. 10 minutes.

Lauren's Healthy Vegan "Fried Rice" (Serves 1, but you could obviously make this for way more people, I just always cook for myself....sad, I know and most other people eat like shit.)
1 small frying pan
1.2 cup Firm Tofu
1.2 cup packaged frozen spinach (thawed and squeezed)
1.2 cup pre-cooked brown rice (Not that processed white shit, gotta go for the complex carb)
Pinches of Cumin, Carraway, Fennel, and Pepper (I did more of a sprinkling but whatever you like)
2 tbsp of Soy Sauce

Directions:
1.Heat up frying pan, spray with canola oil or any light non-stick spray
2.In a separate bowl, combine spinach, crumbled tofu, and brown rice with fork until mixed but Tofu is still in large chunks.
3.Throw in a frying pan, add spices cook for 5 minutes.
4. drizzle soy sauce over dish, and toss for another 2 minutes in pan.
5. Eat up!! I drank a big glass of green tea water with it. And I've never felt better!!

It's a completely balanced nutritious meal: Protein, iron, complex carbs and yummy spices that help with digestion. All ready in under 10 minutes and uses only 1 small pan. Perfect for college students, or anyone like me who likes to throw things in a pan and call it a meal! It's my healthful version of fried rice.

When Your Pencil Skirt Rips...

Have you ever contemplated what you would do if you were on the way to a very important interview and your new pencil skirt decided to rip all the way down your backside as you stand up to get off the train?
......

I hadn't either, unfortunately, it happened to me. I was headed to my second one-on-one interview at Tiffanys. I wanted to look business-y and sophisticated so I bought a black, stretch pencil skirt from Target. (Note: This was an Australian Target, I hold no sour feelings towards American Targets at all...in fact I love and miss you American Target. You hold a special place in my heart.) Anyways,
I was feeling confident, calm and relaxed going over possible answers to most likely asked interview questions. I even decided to go with my Michael Kors pumps with the adorable studded bows on the front (that my ever-so-sweet BF gifted with me when I won a bowling challenge...completely different story.)
Maybe I hadn't gotten my good karma points in for the week, or maybe I should have thrown a few dollars in the guy sitting next to the train plucking away at his guitar. Whatever it was, I'm not a fan.
As I got off the rush-hour packed train, I was feeling confident and with only 25 minutes before the interview I took long, determined strides. I hate being late and showing up 10-15 minutes early to me is being on time. This would have all worked out well in theory if I hadn't of had the feeling to smooth the back of my skirt out. The new skirt I had jump bought wasn't supposed to feel like butt skin was it? I thought it was Lycra and cotton?
HOLY S&%$!!
IT felt like butt skin because it WAS my butt! My pencil skirts back seam had decided to give way to my ass and give it some air. I didn't want it to get air, but it did...in front of an entire train station full of people. So I darted into the closest restroom to assess the damage.
Disaster. No Easy Fix.
With 20 min. to go I ran to the closest clothing store I knew rather well and raced around grabbing anything black and knee-length. Luckily my extreme shopping-abilities allowed me to quickly and efficiently find an acceptable piece and purchase within the dressing room.
After I got a nod of approval from the saleswoman and ducked out of the store and made my way to my interview with 6 minutes to spare before I considered myself late.
And I was touching my butt the whole way there. You butt just doesn't get over embarrassment like that easily.
......
I returned the stupid skirt and I'm officially boycotting all Australian Targets until I leave the country and return to my homeland of reliable Targets.
...
And when you Pencil skirt rips, when you get home drown your self in rum and get a good laugh/cry in.

*Note: I did in fact get the job I interviewed for. Must have been the shoes.

An Interview at Tiffanys

This was the first time I have ever been excited to interview for a job. Other interviews have merely been because I desperately need money. This was completely different. I would probably work at Tiffany's for free, just to have reason to stay in the store all day without looking like a complete creep.
I got the call last week that I was invited to the "evening of recruitment" and received an official letter (which I'm totally saving) and a beautiful application. This wasn't just two piece of papers stapled together, it was a shiny, pretty application book. I wish I could have kept that too!
The evening went fabulously. It was hard for me to concentrate having to sit in amongst all those pretty little things!! But I did and felt rather confident since I had spent the hours before that brushing up on all my Tiffanys History and Knowledge.
Do you know the difference between a CARAT and a KARAT? well, I do.
I've never enjoyed an interview as much as this one. We even had Tiffany's blue water bottles on our seats. (Perfection)
Although I was pretty nervous and didnt say all the points about why I would be the best Tiffany's employee they'd ever seen, I got a call back! So today I have a one on one interview.
Thus I am going shopping.
And thus I am so determined to get a job at Tiffanys.
Have you ever actually been excited about the interview process of a job?

Hello, my name is Jealous

Who doesn't get jealous of supermodels? I'll be residing here until the beginning of April. It's been quite the experience so far and I'm really loving it for the most part. (Other than the part of not making any friends yet, but it's on my list) Whatever. Australia is rockin', now that the weather isn't freezing.
We'll be here over Christmas and New Years. On these days I fully intend on being on a beach, in a hot bikini, griping a mimosa in each hand and wishing every Aussie I see a Merry X-mas. That way I really have NO room to complain about not being with my family over these important holidays.

(not mimosa's...but you get the picture)

I never dreamed I'd be in Australia. Its pretty damn cool. Except for the not having a job part. So I have created budgets and I'm able to easily access all my assets and funds. They also send you updates when something happens such as fees, charges, or if you are close to reaching a budget.

I have opened a Scottrade account and have initially invested $1,500 to work with. I'm pretty much obsessed with looking up companies and researching the first few stocks I have added to my portfolio. If I lose it all I may just throw my hands up and let my mutual funds work for me instead of aspiring to become a whiz trader.

My Vanguard account is up and healthy. I initially invested $1,500 in their STAR fund which only requires a $1,000 minimum investment. But they I did some more research into the variety of their funds and decided to put $3,000 in their Wellesley fund. Both have done well in the past and these are more focused on income so they are less risk.

I tried to open an Ally High-Yield Savings account to buy a 2 year CD for $2,000 with a 2.75% interest rate. But for some reason I wasn't able to open one?! I'll have to look into that further.

Overall I feel as I'm really starting to get a good grasp on all this financial hoopla. It's empowering to know I can be responsible and educated on these subject matters. And should really help in the future when I go to make more important decisions regarding my finances. Loans, real estate buying etc. I've taking it upon myself to educate myself on all this by utilizing the local library and pretty much getting every book I can about the economy, personal finance and real estate.

Learn Something New everyday

So on my quest to become more financially educated and independent, I am reading a new book called, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." I heard about it online and noticed that the people I'm staying with had it. So I opened it up and can't put it down. Robert Kiyosaki makes the most intriguing points about personal wealth, investing, and managing money. I haven't finished it yet, since I started it today, but I can already tell its a great read especially for someone just starting out in the world of financial. Kiyosaki puts everything in easy-to-understand terms, and using a lot of diagrams to get his point across. As a very visual learner I found this to be a huge help as I understand things much easier when I can look at them and memorize them.

So I would recommend this to anyone look to gain some insight into the "rich" ways of thinking and managing money.
With that said, I learned a hard lesson today about being more careful with ATM's and traveling abroad. The other night when me and my boyfriend went out, I used the ATM twice to get some cash out using my American Card. The ATM didn't charge any fees which we thought at the time was great. I knew there would be a .03% international currency exchange fee, but what I DIDN'T know was that my bank would charge me $10, you heard me, 10 dollars each time I used the ATM. So that would be a cool 20 Dollars to make 2 separate transactions to get out $130. In addition to the train ticket I bought $6.50, dinner I bought $20, 2 drinks $10.
1 friday night out cost me $186.50. In addition to separate currency fees at .03% each. So total I spent probably upwards of $190 in one night.
I'm clearly living way beyond my means at this point. Seeing as my current income is a big $0.
So I have to start being more active in controlling how and why I spend my money. I'm going to create a budget on Mint.com and see if that helps. And although the ATM snafu is completely infuriating there is not much I can do about it. So I have learned and will not be so foolish next time.
I have been figuring out how to gain more assets through my Vanguard account. As I started out with $1,500 just to get my feet wet. I want to invest about $2,000-$3,000 more in different funds, bonds, or CD's. I have to thank my parents for :
A) Buying me a car my second year in college
B) Being smart enough to allow me to sell it
C) For letting me keep the money to continue my education
D) For not getting irate with me when I invest the money
E) Trusting me that I will not make the same financial mistakes they did
F) Giving me lots of hugs and kisses as a child (this doesn't really pertain, I just love them for this)

Hope everyone is having a wealthy and happy day!

young and LOVIN' the recession!

I'm loving me some personal finance lately, which you'd know if you read my earlier post on the book, "Common Cents." Well, I read it, subscribed to Forbeswoman.com, and finally opened a Roth IRA account at the ripe old age of; 20. I am officially an investor now and working on my retirement account. My parents couldn't be more proud, especially since they didn't start saving until their 30's and most of that went with the crash. With all the commotion going on in our economy and stock market right now, the irony of it all may be that my generation may benefit the most from it. With that said, the job market may be the only thing holding us back from completely reaping the benefits of this recession.

On paper my personal situation may seem rather dire:
Just over a $1000 in the bank
Don't have a full-time job (Or any job right now at that matter)
Don't have a college degree

But on the other hand, I do have:
An investment account (Finally!)
No student loans to pay off
No credit card debits
Intelligence and creativity

Us 20-somethings have huge opportunities to reap immensely from the recession! Our parents may not be happy with how things panned out, but right now is the perfect opportunity for us to get in at rates and prices lower than they have been in 10 years.
This article from AOLmoney offers the same perspective about how young people should be jumping at the chance to dip their toes in the stock market pool, make important purchases such as cars and invest in real estate. Now...was this a real "Love at first sight moment" or a race to the alter moment to steal the spotlight from her famous sister Kim or recently pregnant other sister Kortney? I'm sure many people will agree with me that 1 month of dating is not ample time to get to know someone, understand them and feel confident that spending the rest of your lives together is what you want to do. It seems like the sacred act of marriage has been tainted by celebrities need to collect marriages like they do new handbags each season.

But Khloe and Lamar, I hope you prove me wrong and make me look like a fool in 20 years for writing this. I'm sure there are a lot of haters out there saying Rachel Zoe is a complete nut case and is the definition of workaholic. but I LOVE IT! She is so outspoken, creative and fabulous in every sense of the word.(Can you tell who's team I'm pulling for?!) But that's when she's at work or working. At home (The few times she is at home) she relaxes in her plush robe (She has been quoted to say she's never put on sweats) and is rather soft-spoken especially towards her oh-so-supportive husband Rodger.
For anyone who hasn't seem the show, you should. Brad is the sharply dressed, overzealous gay assistant who is always the first to play BFF with Rachel. Taylor is the hard-working, bitchtastic, loyal first assistant to Rachel. And Rodger is a venture capitalist who started his own cyber media and internet awards company.
So the whole point of this was just to say how strong celebrities and TV personalities can influence us, "commoners". Rachel and Taylor always seem to have perfectly manicured, deliciously fashionable dark nails. So of course, since stylist to the stars knows best I followed suit.
(Not my real hand, my nail-biters anonymous status doesn't allow me to post my real nails)
Every other clip seems to show Rachel, Brad or Taylor clutching their signature designer starbucks cup like it was going out of style. "Common Cent$" by Nancy Kimelman. I have been focusing on educating myself on finances and all that jazz now that I'm supporting myself and I'm the one in control of my money now.

<img src="http://images.barnesandnoble.com/images/26460000/26460622.JPG" alt="Common Cents by Nancy J. Gloriously entertaining, I know. But when it comes to my money or lack there of, I'm deeply interested. Being 20, I realize just how much of my money has gone to waste over the years on things I can't even remember owning. (ie: everything BUT my jean collection which I view as investment pieces not mearly closet items) Of course, I had no finanical education from my parents who decided to spend my college fund on a new pool, but that's a whole other post. With this said, I want to introduce you all to my new bestie:

Luckily, the set-up of the Forbes.com is very reminiscant to Bluefly.com and Net-A-Porter so I should be in business navigating my way around the various articles on CD's and RothIRA's, etc. etc. etc.
Now I just to find some money to work with and I'll be in business.
Watch out Wall Street, Lo-Lo's coming to town.
(Just for everyone's interests sake, when I visited NYC I actually got to go on the floor of the Stock Exchange! I even got to wear one of those little stock broker jackets because I wasn't dressed appropriately: I wasn't wearing a blazer over my sexy button down...oh well.)

oh Fail!

I'm sure many of you have seen the website Fail Blog which highlights people's fails in life. Without I wouldn't have convinced my loving boyfriend to get out of bed and take me to Starbucks instead of using our trusted Coffee Pot! :D Facebook informed me late last night that Starbucks was giving away free pastries today! So with our sweats on, and some over-sized shades we got to Starbucks to discovered we needed a coupon. Needless to say, we obviously didn't have one. So we stood in line watching everyone flash their Iphones and pretty coupons, while we sulked all the way to the front. I ordered my Venti Iced Coffee w/ splash of soy and vanilla and walked away with my head hung. But, when I went to retrieve my coffee, the boyfriend had pastry in hand.
Me: "So you caved and bought the $3 pastry?"
BF: "No."
Me:"Ok, so did you pull an invisible coupon out of your pocket?"
BF:"No, I'm just good like that...she gave it to me."
Me:"Innappropriate...but good for you baby! Use what yo' mama gave you!"

We did get the free pastry after all; couponless and all. :D

Decisions, Decisions

I haven't posted on here in forever, and I apologize! I've been so busy starting a new job and maintaining Blissful that I have let little ole' Swanky be forgotten. But I'll try my hardest to keep it up.
I'm up and ready to go to work...Its 7:47am and I started the coffee pot, on days off it is most definitely the work of my significant other since I take the opportunity to bury myself deep within the comfort of Egyptian cotton. This is where I arrive at my dilemma. I'm craving a Starbucks. I unfortunately can't recall the last time I was gifted with a steaming, hot soy latte from where I consider a little piece of heaven in a coffee cup. So as I go about making this fulfilling, although deeply unsatisfying cup of coffee, I can't help but to consider drinking my homemade cup and then just happening to stop by the Bucks before work. I mean, lets examine all the reasons why it would be such a fabulous idea:
1. I'm going to work and need an extra boost
2. I'd be helping the economy.
3.Starbucks is launching a new brand that will include serving alcohol at their locations.
4. I don't want a Tall soy latte to go to waste.
5. It's only $5 (Ok, this isn't a good one, but whatever)
6. That's what they made credit for
7. I haven't had one in 2 weeks due to my personal financial crisis
8.I deserve it
9. It would set the mood for my entire day.

Now, I'm a pretty rational person and really take care of my money except for in these instances:
1. If I find a pair of jeans I like because you can't put a price tag on great-fitting denim.
2. It's a little odd and obscure. But really simple, but really complex. Since my blog is called Swank Simplexity, aren't I allowed to do things like that? I love coming up with really weird combinations of foods and last night I had the urge to make a healthy, vegan dessert.
*factoid about myself you may or may not already know from my McDonalds post: I'm vegetarian, and was vegan for a while. I'm a food snob and prefer organic, healthy foods any day.

Anyways, last night I had a definite sweet tooth. I knew I wanted some Dark Chocolate, so we went and got a Chocolove 65% dark chocolate bar. For those who are food stupid: Dark Chocolate (NOT milk chocolate) in moderation is great for you. It's full of antioxidants and nutrients, boosts hydration, smoothness and protection against sun exposure in the skin.
I took two squares off the bar (ok and ate one) then melted it over 2 bananas. If you've never heated a banana up in the microwave it does the most incredible thing, it releases it's sugar and gets all soft and sweet. (Thing banana split minus all the fattening ice cream and whipped cream) I shouldn't have to tell you the nutritional benefits of a banana. Fruit is good for you, 'nuff said.
Then once the chocolate had melted, I spinkled a little bit of unsweetened organic coconut shreds over it, and some raw almonds slivers. Almonds have omega-3's which help fight skin aliments and helps fight belly fat.
If this sounds gross to you, too bad...you're missing out on one of the best tasty, late night snacks I've ever had. And I didn't feel an ounce of guilt. Be jealous.

the birds and the bees....i mean turtle and boot

Confused Tortoise Has Sex With Boot - Watch more Funny Videos

I can't watch this poor little guy with out dying laughing and then once the video's done...I can't help but recreate that sound he makes every time. I refuse to talk about his Fast Food habits anymore because it just makes me upset.

Random Fact number one about me: I'm a food snob. I prefer organic in any possible situation, I don't enjoy heavily processed foods and I love cooking. I've been vegan for about a year and a half, and although I still dont' eat meat I will on occasion eat things that may contain dairy or eggs.(Although I've found it's best to stay away due to my onset of lactose intolerance) I haven't stepped near a Mc'D's since I was 12 and found an employee hair in my sealed parfait. I had never been to a Waffle House until we got stranded in ATL for the night (don't get me started on this night) and hadn't eaten since 8 am. (I don't do plane food either...see where I'm going with this?) Anyways, long rant short, I refuse to give any money to McD's or any other fast food company. With possibly the except of Chic-Fil-La, who've I've researched and found to be quite a good company. By this I mean on occasion(aka forced) I'll opt for their fruit cup and measly excuse of a salad...(a few pieces of lettuce with a slice of tomato)...
for the sake of my (future children's) health and well-being I'm refusing them from eating fast-food....that will be a whole other argument with the BF completely!

End of Rant.

What my post was going to say was:
I'm still in bed..
It's 11:05am.
And all I want is a starbucks to float down from the heaven's and cuddle with me in my egyptian cotton sheets.

How to Retire a Millionaire by Age 45

I'm young...very young in relation to the world. 20. Anyways, we headed to The Bridge which is a contemporary service held at the First United Methodist Church downtown...

And I LOVED IT!

there was band, and the pastor told a great sermon. I didn't feel awkward being there,(ok I won't lie the first 5 minutes but after that I was fine) I didn't feel pressured or I fully enjoyed the experience and look forward to making it a reoccurring activity for us. It helped me just relax for a while and just reflect on myself. Since I was brought up without the influence of religion I am hoping to learn how faith can positively influence the choices I will make in life.

Things I've Learned in the Last Year

I've been thinking alot about some important lessons I've learned over the last year:

1. If you're unhappy with your situation...CHANGE IT! Don't let others determine your happiness, fate or decide whats "best for you." You are the ruler of your destiny.

2. I've learned what it means to finally be in a strong, supportive relationship. And I like it, but it makes me feel silly

3. Breaking a shopping habit is difficult; but do-able. I have my credit card paid off, and money in the bank. It relieves much stress, except doesn't make

4. Stop planning and start living. I used to be so concerned with trying to plan and worry about the future and I realized in a a HAH moment that I should just live NOW. oh for the love of the present.

5. Laugh...alot. Find something that always makes you laugh, and hold on to it...tightly!

6. Before you think its a good idea to stop showing up to work...remember how nice the bi-weekly paychecks were and decide if it was worth the 5 hours of fun you didn't have shopping.

7. Take more time than you think is needed to tell the people in your life that you love them and appreciate them.

Star-Broke

Every morning I wake up and start my coffee IV drip...I stop around 5pm. so I'll be able to sleep only to start the cycle again the next morning.
